What affects service life of a gas combi boiler?
Generally speaking, the service life of a regular wall-hung boiler is 10-15 years, but due to the influence of the material, production process, core technology, parts etc, the service life of the inferior wall-hung boilers may be 5-8 years. A wall-hung boiler with excellent quality may still have stable performance after 15-20 years of use.
Combination boiler lifespan is related to water quality and maintenance in addition to daily operation. For example, it is advisable not to alter or dismount the main duct, no hanging things on the flue. Space adjacent to the flue should be keep well ventilated and cleared for safety concern.
Besides, the followings are common factors affecting gas combination boiler lifespan:
1. Water quality
If the hardness of water is too high, when it is heated, the calcium, magnesium, iron etc will quickly combine with the carbonate, silicate, hydroxide etc in the water, forming scale like calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate etc. When scale is firmly attached to the inner walls of heat exchangers and pipes, it will lead to poor heat exchange effect of the system, narrowed pipe diameter, slow water flow or even blockage, which as a result, increases fuel consumption. Once water passage through the water pump becomes slow or blockage takes place, the pump is prone to failure and the main heat exchanger is also easily damaged under the high temperature of the flame. As a result, it shortens the service life of the water circulation system of the wall-hung boiler.
2. Maintenance of water circulation system
After the heating season, be sure to drain the water in the heating system and inject water to flush out the dirt in the system until it is thoroughly cleaned. After that, fills up with fresh soft water and adjusts the pressure to normal. At the beginning of the new heating season, another flushing and water change should be carried out. The heating system shouldn't be left in a no-water state for a long time, as it will accelerate the oxidation and corrosion process of the heating system, which does no good to the heating system.
3. Gas quality
The gas wall-hung boiler can be fueled by natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and artificial coal gas. Natural gas and LPG are relatively clean. In contrast to NG or LPG, coal gas contains a lot of impurities and low calorific value, and its composition is not consistent. All these has adverse influence on the operation and lifespan of a wall mounted combi boiler.
During the combustion and operation of gas wall-hung boilers, impurities and dust enter the system and deposit as sediments. If the system has not been cleaned for a long time, bit by bit, the heat exchange, exhaust and ventilation will be affected, and noise and malfunctions may occur in severe cases.
Secondly, in some cases, impurities in the pipeline will enter the gas valve along with the gas, which might block gas valve and nozzle, and then affect normal combustion.
Moreover, after long-term operation, excessive impurities and dust might be left in the air and combustion chamber. In some cases, this will affect the normal full combustion and decrease the heat input.
4. Inappropriate operation
Appropriate operation of the gas boiler is critical. After the boiler is installed and commissioned, the user should follow instructions in the User Manual.Take notes of do and don’ts regarding water filling, water drainage, temperature regulation, switch on/off precautions and shooting of simple problems etc. Appropriate operation can surely reduce risk of damages or failures of the units.
